SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, is the techniques implemented to optimize the presence/position of a website in search engine results pages (SERP), or in other words, the ultimate goal of SEO is to make our website to be on the first page in SERP when one searches for specific keyword.

It's important a website to be within first pages of search results, because in general, one is just interested to see the first 3 to 5 pages of search results. Surely they don't want to see hundreds or thousands of links on the next pages. So by being on top position, the number of visits to our website will most likely increase in number.

Activities of Search Engine Optimization consists of two kinds, namely on-page SEO and off-page SEO.

On-page SEO

On-page SEO is optimization techniques which is performed directly on a website, namely done by modifying various elements in website so that it can be easily identified and categorized (indexed) by search engines based on keywords. Some factors included are:
- Choosing domain name
- Originality of the content
- The appropriate selection of keywords
- The appropriate use of Alt tag for images
etc

Off-page SEO

Unlike the On-Page, Offpage basically consists of factors that are not found on web page, but is used in search engine algorithm when determining the ranking of a site. Ranking is used by search engines to determine the position of a website in search results. The higher the rank, then the higher the website position will be. Several factors which determine the Off-page SEO are:
- Number of Backlinks from other websites
- Page Rank of website which providing backlink
etc

Actually there are lots of factors can determine success in SEO. One example is that not all types of websites can be read properly by search engines. Website with flash covering majority of page is currently not able to be read properly by search engines. Search engines are also difficult to understand optimally towards websites using navigation with JavaScript and frames. Conversely, websites which meet the W3C standards will be indexed properly by search engines. So even website with very modern look doesn't guarantee to get good position in SERP.

In addition, growing number of websites in the world cause all search engines like google, yahoo, bing, and others will improve their algorithms from time to time in order to satisfy their users. In fact, Google search engine algorithm (aka Google Panda) has recently updated and changed their techniques in determining site ranking. It's a must for webmaster to follow SEO info periodically.
